Not too long ago, we welcomed yet another season of itchy eyes, throats, and sneezing. If you haven't checked out my previous post on how to rid your allergies with your oils, check it out here. Allergy symptoms are completely manageable using dōTERRA's oils and TriEase softgels. However, the amount of pollen that plunges into the house upon the door opening is not. I have been cleaning something after work, every day for the last two weeks. While I wish this post were to inform you about how to rid your house of all the pollen that gets trekked in, it is not. Instead, I will tell you how I am mastering cleaning during this spring season using my essential oils.
Did I mention that there is pollen all over my house? If you seriously haven't checked out the post where I labeled a book as my best friend, then go now. The Essential Life book is marvelous. I would recommend it to anyone who uses essential oils or is constantly asking themselves how to use oils.
When I first decided I would start using essential oils, I barely used them. They sat in my drawer for way too long. What sounded like a great idea was just a thought that I never developed. It took a long while before I started researching oils and even longer before including them in my everyday routine. Now I use them for EVERYTHING. Cleaning, cooking, ailments, mood enhancers, you name it. The more I use them, the more I love them.
So if you're like me and you clean a lot, you need some go-to nontoxic cleaning supplies. Most commonly, I use an All-Purpose Cleaner that I found in The Essential Life book. I ordered this Glass Spray Bottle Kit from Amazon, but there are so many alternatives out there.
If you want to test out the cleaner, start small and use an appropriate amount of ingredients for the size of your bottle. I chose to use a 16 oz. spray bottle to fill with the concoction because I knew I would use it. Using a funnel to ensure you don't spill, add:
All-Purpose Cleaner:
1 cup distilled water
1 cup white distilled vinegar
1 teaspoon natural dish soap
15 drops lemon essential oil
10 drops tea tree oil
After securely attaching the lid, shake it to ensure it mixes. Use this on any cleaning surface you can think of, countertops, window seals, washing the shelves in your cabinet after purging expired product.
A hot item that most people don't clean daily is the oven. My hands were raw after moving out of my second college apartment and scrubbing everything from top to bottom. I blame it on the oven cleaner. No cleaner should ever leave your hands feeling and looking the way my fingers did. Since discovering The Essential Life book, I don't have to worry about that. I used a 4 oz. spray bottle and cut this recipe in half. I also substituted the castile soap for coconut oil. I will leave the full recipe below, and you can alter it as you wish.
Oven Cleaner:
1 cup warm water
3 tablespoons baking soda
1 tablespoon castile soap
5 drops lemon essential oil
5 drops clove essential oil
Cooking and baking are both everyday occurrences in my household. With that comes the never-ending spillage of oils, cupcake batter, burnt chocolate, etc. We have a dishwasher but don't use it for a variety of reasons. The other night I was standing at the sink washing the pots and pans used to make dinner and noticed that the pans had grease, oil, and other nonidentifiable remainders of food on the exterior. I grabbed my phone and googled what I could use to restore them. Low and behold, listed were toxic cleaners that I don't think anyone keeps in their house.
I improvised, washed the pan with dish soap and water, then laid it in the sink still damp, and sprinkled enough baking soda to cover the burnt sections. Then I grabbed one of the ten lemon essential oils I have lying around the house and added about 2-4 drops to the baking soda. I allowed it to sit for 2-3 minutes because I wasn't sure how it would react with the pan. I also used a scrubber I knew wouldn't hurt the pan, and I wasn't worried about using it on other dishes because humans can ingest both lemon essential oil and baking soda. Not even kidding, the bottoms look like I've only used them once, and we've had them for years. I wish I would have taken a before picture.
There are so many sections of the house to hit when spring cleaning. If you're going to clean your home well, you should also be doing so with nontoxic products. Hopefully, these few recipes will give you better alternatives. Don't forget to experiment and try mixtures of your own. You can make your own dish soap, laundry detergent, and even combine oils to remove odors from the fridge. If you haven't looked into purchasing The Essential Life book, then I highly suggest it. The book contains excellent blends of all dōTERRA's oils.
